In 1692, during the Edo period, Shogun Kanamori was assigned by order of the Edo Shogunate to Takayama in order to make it a directly controlled area. Takayama Jinya was the ”Daikan”, the representative office of Shogun Kanamori. It was also used as prefectural office until 1969.

In the past, there were more than 60 Daikan all over Japan, but now, only Takayama Jinya is left.

Since the provincial governors used to live in Takayama Jinya, you can see their workplace as well as living room kitchen etc., understanding how Japanese people use to live during Edo period.

Since Takayama Jinya is the only one left in Japan, we are proud of being able to have our guests experience the history of Takayama and how a Daikan office looked like. We are pleased that there are so many people who are interested in Japanese history and culture. We have guests not only from Japan but also from all over the world. Diring the busiest times, more than 60% of guests are from overseas. They are very interested in the history as well as the garden and the architecture of the building.

Restoring the roof is very expensive. It's an old building, so it's technically difficult. It is built the same way as temples, so it is very hard to do maintenance.

The staff at Takayama Jinya also offer guides in foreign languages. Normally we offer Japanese and English guidance, but depending on the staff Spanish and Chinese is available as well. I can speak Chinese.

Once a group of 5 Chinese guests came and I attended to them. Everyone was pleased and I was able to guide with a fairly friendly feeling. At that time, one of the members of the group was studying abroad in Japan, and when I explained the details of history in Chinese language, he helped me. I was very grateful to him. Even after the tour was over, they thanked me gently and we exchange contacts with the promise that they would have come again to visit Jinya.

I like the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall (Yatai Kaikan) quite a lot. Whenever my friends visit me, I often go there with them. Of course, you can see the Festival Floats during the festival, but the road is always so crowded. Instead, at the museum you can take a look slowly and enjoy the manufacture.

The staff wear masks and face shields. Disinfectant is provided at the entrance and around the building.

We measure our guests' body temperature and have them using alcohol at the entrance. We also ask them to wear the mask during the tour.

The number of people is also counted. Up to 200 people can enter at the same time. Inside, the walk path is predetermined so that the room will not be crowded.
