I started Café Courier with my husband three years ago. We made the space for the shop by ourselves from painting the walls to remodeling the chairs and counters. My husband likes to travel and he visited almost all countries. So, we designed the café focusing on it. You can find all his old passports on the counter and we have a lot of travel guides you can consult while drinking a coffee. Originally, we were planning to create a guest house or accommodation for tourists, but we I could not find a good property. When we found this property, the owner was against making a guest house, but agreed to make it into a café. That is how we started. It has been three years now and I can say we are doing great. It is a fun and rewarding job.

We choose travels as the theme for this café. Both I and my husband love traveling, so when guests come, I hope they can find here, a place where they can exchange information and talk about their travels while drinking coffee. Also, I am a Taiwanese, so we have a selection of Taiwanese food and tea as well.

I love Japan. Especially, I admire Japanese design. I studied design in Taiwan first and then in Osaka. Then, I found a job about design in Tokyo. After that, I met my husband and came to Takayama.

The name “Courier” means a carrier. My husband used to do this kind of work and we were inspired from that. Like the carrier connect different people we would like for Café Courier to be a connecting point between Takayama and the world. The reason why our logo is with a rope is that it is an image of connection among people themselves and the world.

If you look at the notes on the counter, they have drawings of the café I have been to. I was originally an interior designer and I still have the hobby of drawing such painting. Once, a guest from San Francisco happened to be the person who grind coffee beans at the San Francisco cafe depicted in the notebook. It was incredible memories! We talked about our travels and we even took pictures together.

Now, there are many local customers because of COVID-19, but during the high season more than half is from overseas. In winter, there are many Asians guests, in spring and summer, manly from Europe and the United States.

I like to go to cafes. There are many good cafes in Takayama, and I recommend the cafe called Hiramekido in Kokufu (the name of place in Takayama). The building is an old folk house, and the theme is space. I also like SOY café (introduced before on this facebook page ). It is very relaxing place.

I wipe the chairs and tables with disinfectant and I am careful to ventilate a lot. Of course, we are always wearing masks.
