I started Guest House Tomaru about 10 years ago. I've been doing it since 2011. The guesthouse has three rooms, a total of 15 people can stay at the same time and there is a shared space on the ground floor. The room are usually only used to sleep, and the guests often spends time in the lounge or in the common space. They often exchange information with other travelers, and the locals often come to have a chat. I am happy I can have this much exchange and interactions with my guests. Our theme is “at home” inn. I try to create an atmosphere like this to make it easier to interact with my guests. Since there are also many people who travel alone, the staff also communicate with them and recommend their own favorite restaurants and places around Takayama.

We have an exchange event about once a month. It is joined by locals and guests together. We usually have a potluck or eat and BBQ together. Guests often enjoy this kind of activity and they even play with my kids. It makes me happy. From now on, I would like to put more effort into such things.

Our theme is “at home”, so we don't have many staff members. During peak season we are usually busy and it is a little hard to work.

I came from Tokyo 10 years ago and started this inn. Takayama is a compact town with both a living area and a tourist area. I often ride my bicycle with my children around the old town, see traditional places, and I like the feeling of this town.

The old streets are the most popular. Recently, the mountains have become popular. Usually not for hiking, most people just want to take a walk in the mountains.

We are providing alcohol, wearing masks and measuring heat. We are also reducing the number of guests.
