Hida no Sato (photo)

This course is recommended to those who want to visit the city center and enjoy some outdoor activities. 

Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  1. JR Takayama Station
     (10-15 minute walk)
  2. Miyagawa Morning Market
    Stalls are lined up along the east side of Miyagawa River. The vendors sell seasonal fruit and vegetables, flowers and folk crafts.
    (5-7 minute walk)
  3. Furui-Machinami (Old Township)
    Traditional townhouses which were established between the 17th and the 19th century line the streets here. The streets retain these historical symbols of the once flourishing merchant town.

    Nohi Bus Center
    (10 minute bus ride (Sarubobo Bus: 210 yen per adult & 110 yen per child))
    All-Day Access Pass (620 yen per adult, 310 yen per child. The pass can be used for Sarubobo Bus, Machinami Bus and Nora-My-Car.) 
  5. Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village)
    Thirty traditional Hida houses (private houses with gasshozukuri [joined-hands] style architecture and thatched roofs) are in the village. There are rice paddies, vegetable fields and ponds which create an image of a traditional Japanese agricultural village. Visitors can enjoy the straw work demonstration and other seasonal events all year round. 
    Omoide Taikenkan (Crafts Experience Center)
    This building is located right next to Hida no Sato. Visitors can try various handicrafts such as sarubobo doll making, senbei cracker making and ceramic painting.

  6. Hida Takayama Teddy Bear Eco Village
    Inside an ancient gasshozukuri (joined-hands style architecture) private house, 1,000 teddy bears—very old ones and ones made by well-known artists in Japan and overseas—are  displayed.

  7. Hida Takayama Museum of Art
    This is one of the few museums of decorative art in the world. It houses mainly glass art and fin-de-siècle (end of the century) art.
