Mayor's Greetings

This is Akila Tanaka, Mayor of Takayama City. 

Thank you for visiting the Takayama City website. 

Our city is located in the northern part of Gifu Prefecture and is the largest city in Japan in terms of area. It is an area rich in nature, surrounded by the mountains of the Northern Alps. 

For more than 35 years since declaring itself an international tourist city in 1986, we have been working to promote international tourism. Walking maps in 12 different languages and free Wi-Fi access are provided throughout the city to create a comfortable environment for tourists to enjoy sightseeing. Furthermore, with restaurants offering menus that take into account religious and dietary customs, a council promoting barrier-free dining, and more, the businesses in the city continue to sincerely welcome travelers. 

In addition, since becoming a sister city to Denver, USA in 1960, the city has established sister and friendship city affiliation with five other cities around the world, while also focusing on international exchange and promoting interaction among citizens. 

When staying in Takayama, please enjoy the nature, traditions, culture, and food of the region while observing good manners and etiquette to prevent the spread of disease. You are also encouraged to interact with the locals.
