What are Foothills of Mt. Norikura?

map Goshikigahara lies in the foothills of magnificent Mt. Norikura and is a huge forest zone. It has 3,000 ha and is located in the southern part of the Central Mountain National Park. In this area we have seen broadleaf forests covered with Beech, Quercus crispula, and Pterocarya rhoifolia, conifer forests with Abies veitchii, Abies mariesii, and Tsuga diversifolia, and rare wild grasses, various kinds of wild animals, wild birds and insects. And we can see many seasonal phenomena in mountain streams, waterfalls, and marshlands.

The staff of Goshikigahara endeavors to keep its beauty, to improve the quality of ecology, and set the promenade (walking road) which is the minimum for protecting the natural environment. Staff members also endeavor to provide a detected guide for visitors so they can understand the long-continued relationship between the people living around Norikura and the plants, animals, topography, or geology of Goshikigahara.

Goshikigahara's genuine nature, which shows a different wonderful face in each season, makes you want to come back again and again.

We have every confidence that you want to come here again with your family or friends.

For those who want to meet fairies

fairy In this forest, there live fairies that really take after humans like Tinkerbell in the movie Peter Pan. Their wings are transparent. When they bask in the moonlight, the female twinkles like a rainbow, the male twinkles silver.

They chat and play a lot in the forest, laughing the time away. Please listen carefully to their chatting and look closely as they are fly over the flowers. The white Clintonia udensis and Diphylleia grayi must have a nice scent after the fairies have gone.

But not everyone can see the fairies. They never appear to those who throw litter away or break the plants. The fairies are watching your action all the time. If you are pure in mind, they will certainly appear. We hope that as many of you as possible will see the fairies.
