Rotenburo-no-hi (Open-air Bath Day)

On June 26, a date that is a word-play linking 6/26 with the Japanese word "Rotenburo", 5 Onsen in Okuhida Onsen-go will offer free admission to their Rotenburo or open-air baths. Guests who collect 5 stamps from the participating Rotenburo will be given a small gift.

As of the date of publication, the following onsen are expected to participate: Hirayu-no-yu (Hirayu Onsen), Isurugi-no-yu (Fukuji Onsen), Kojin-no-yu (Tochio Onsen), Shin-Hotaka-no-yu (Shin-Hotaka Onsen) and Higaku-no-yu (Shin-Hotaka Onsen) . Participation may vary, and this list is not binding.

Opening Festival of the Climbing Season for Mt. Norikura (Norikura Skyline Opens)

This is the opening festival of the climbing season for Mt. Norikura in the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park. Norikura Skyline, a sightseeing road, has been operated for 40 years since it opened in 1973. The festival includes a praying ceremony for road safety, sake tasting and folk performances in the Tatamidaira parking lot at the height of 2,702m above sea level. Norikura Skyline opens from 1 May to 31 October.

Red Nakabashi Bridge Light Display in New Green Leaf Season

Spring Takayama Festival (Sanno Festival)

This is one of the most beautiful Japanese festivals with twelve gorgeous festival floats. The highlights are mechanical doll presentations on the three floats called Sanba-so, Ryujin-tai and Shakkyo-tai floats. You cannot miss the float parade at night. In case of rain the floats will stay inside.

69th Hida Real Life Hina Festival

Hida Real Life Hina Festival takes place annually on the third of April at the Hida Ichinomiya Minashi Shrine and its surroundings. This traditional festival is conducted to pray for a good harvest and women’s happiness. It is known nationally therefore it attracts many visitors. Nine unmarried women are chosen from the Hida area and dress up as Hina dolls. As Hina dolls they participate in a parade and mochi throwing ceremony. A collaborative event with TV anime show HYOUKA also takes place on this day.

Sake Brewery Tour

Okagami and Hanamochi Making

Okagami and Hanamochi are traditional decorations for the New Year’s celebration. They are made of rice cakes and displayed at our homes. Visitors are welcome to see how they are made. It is worth seeing all our staff making them in a large tatami room at the Maeda residence. Anyone can join while listening to old stories.

Shimenawa and Shimekazari Making

Shimenawa and Shimekazari are traditional decorations for the New Year’s celebration. They are displayed at shrines, torii gates and houses. At Hida Folk Village approximately 300 bundles of straw from Kurumada of Hida no Sato are used to make these decorations. Visitors are welcome to see how we make them. It is especially worth seeing the making of a large Shimenawa for a tori gate of the Takumi shrine. It requires four people to complete it combining 50 shimenawa in different sizes.

Hida Takayama Snow Ski Opening

Fire Drill at a gassho-style house in Hida no Sato

Many tourists always visit Hida no Sato where a number of important traditional houses and handcrafts are preserved. These include important cultural properties designated by the national government, Gifu prefecture, or the city of Takayama. It is very important to have adequate safety measures such as proper communication, early fire extinction and an evacuation guide to minimize the damage in case of fire. As part of this we conduct fire drills twice a year.

Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Festival)

This is an extremely elegant and beautiful festival which is among the three most beautiful festivals of Japan. The highlights of the festival are gorgeous floats described as “moving Youmeimon” and mechanical dolls skillfully operated on the floats. In case of a rainy day or it is likely to rain, the floats stay inside of the warehouses.
