Late December to Early January Winter Illumination in Takayama
  The snow-covered Nakabashi and Miyagawa River area is illuminated to create a fantastic landscape.
Place: Nakabashi Bridge and nearby area 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm
   
Mid December to Late March Ski resorts are opened
   
Late December to Late February Illuminaion of Taruma Kanekori in the Oku Hida Silva Zone
  ‘Taruma Water’ finds its origin in the legend of the founding of the Shin-Hirayu Hot Springs. The renowned mineral water flowing from between the rocks is frozen to make big icicles. Nighttime illumination creates a fantastic image.
   
January 1 New Year’s Traditional Card Game Party
  A traditional event held at the Folk Museum “Hida-no-sato” (Hida Folk Village) where old private homes such as houses with steep rafter roofs are preserved. Anybody can easily experience “the world of gracefulness.”

Early January to Late February Visits to Sake Brewery
  Eight sake breweries open their brewing facilities, which are not open to visitors at other times, for a period of one week in turn. After the guided tour of the brewery, sake is offered to visitors for sampling. In addition, a commemorative golden sake cup made specially in Hida Takayama is presented to each visitor.

Mid January to Late February Winter Illumination of Hida-no-sato (Hida Folk Village)
  The old private houses such as houses with steep rafter roofs are illuminated to create a fantastic landscape.

January to March Illumination of Subzero Forest
  The Subzero Forest is a special winter attraction which has been presented by the isolated mountain inn, ‘Akigami Onsen Ryokan’ since1971. The ”Forest of ice”, which was created by the innkeeper after long years of effort, is lit in blue during the daytime and illuminated at night, showing us a fantastic world.
   
January 24 Nijuyokka-ichi (A fair held on the 24th day)
  Handmade crafts such as “Shouke“ (bamboo maunds), “Amigasa”(braided hats), and “Oke”(wooden pails) which are made by nearby farmers are sold on the street on which the traffic is temporarily closed to create a “pedestrians’ paradise”. In addition, restaurants and shops are lined up forming a busy street (held on January 24th every year since 1872).

Early February Setsubun (Bean-throwing Ceremony)
  About 20 members of Setsubun Association who are dressed like Seven Divinities of Good Luck, red ogres and blue ogres start parading from the temple gate and go through the town passing Takayama Station, Honmachi Street and Kokubunji Temple while throwing beans en route.

Mid February Frozen Hirayu Grand Waterfall Festival
 

From February 15 to 25 every year, the frozen Hirayu Grand Waterfall is illuminated. This 64-meter high and 6-meter wide waterfall shows its majestic shape with massive ice blocks heaped on top of others.
