San-machi, Old streets

San-machi, the old streets, is the iconic district for sightseeing in Takayama. This merchant center was the prosperous heart of the community during the old castle town days. Kami-Sanmachi is especially worth a visit.

The old Sanmachi downtown area grew as people gathered along the lanes linking the castle, prominent temples and shrines, and also flourished around the Takayama-Jinya, the old government office that was built over 300 years ago. The Jinya still stands today.

History feels alive in these beautiful old streets, which have been selected as an important traditional building preservation area. At present, only brown or black buildings are permitted to be remodeled or newly built in order to maintain the area’s unique ambiance.

Local lore maintains that the shops and houses of the Sanmachi district are black because the owners wanted to disguise the fact that they were built using high quality timber, such as cypress and cedar, which were prohibited for private use. To avoid attention from government inspectors, who would have ordered that the building be torn down, the rich timbers were stained with soot or persimmon tannin.

Many of the district’s restaurants and craft shops, along with sake breweries and old fashioned house cafes, use the original historic buildings. Be sure to explore some of these shops, not only to see the goods inside, but to appreciate the architecture as well.
